To qoute our President last night:
"In the first days after the 9/11 attacks, I promised to use every element of national power to fight the terrorists wherever we find them. One of the strongest weapons in our arsenal is the power of freedom. The terrorists fear freedom as much as they do our firepower. They are thrown into panic at the sight of an old man pulling the election lever, of girls enrolling in school or families worshipping God in their own traditions. They know that given a choice, people will choose freedom over their extremist ideology. So their answer is to deny people this choice by raging against the forces of freedom and moderation. "As I have said earlier, I would vote for George W. Bush again, in a heartbeat (unless McCain ran against him).
These terrorists have their whole life set on destroying us. So much so, that they would kill themselves to know tha they would kill thousands of others.
It is sick,
and it is their life's goal.

Freedom? President Bush has a weird way of looking at freedom. Care to comment on the following "freedoms?"
- Unwarranted spying program, where without judicial oversight, the NSA spied on American citizens
- Secret CIA prisons where people have been interred without judicial oversight, legal respresentation or any rights whatsoever. In fact, various forms of torture are probably occuring.
- Using falsified evidence to "prove" existence of Iraqi WMD's
- Guantanamo
- Abu Gharib prison
- ignoring federal court order to cease government spying operations
- etc
- etc
- etc
Freedom? Where?
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Guaranteed to the American people.
I am glad that they spy on American citizens. Al Qaeda spied on us too and flew planes into our buildings, blew up trucks in our buildings, blew up trucks outside US embassy's, drove boats into our boats blowing those up, etc., etc., etc. killing thousands.
Gitmo, Abu Gharib, "secret CIA prisons"...whoopdee do. Bush just had dumb enough luck to be the president in charge when all this was exposed. That stuff had been going on for years. Remember terrorists flew planes into our buildings, blew up trucks in our buildings, blew up trucks outside US embassy's, drove boats into our boats blowing those up, etc., etc., etc. killing thousands.
If you are not doing something to prevent another American from experiencing Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit Happiness then big deal if the government actually tries to spy on the bad guys and get information from them. The worry to you should be the times the information doesn't come out or slips through and terrorists fly planes into our buildings, blew up trucks in our buildings, blew up trucks outside US embassy's, drive boats into our boats blowing those up, etc., etc., etc. killing thousands.
If not for our American government spying, the recent arrests in Britain foiling another plot to blow up planes killing thousands of innocent people would have never been found out.
Freedom is all around us here in America and it is guaranteed to us.
Nothing that you have listed as infringed on the guaranteed freedom our Constitution and Bill of Rights give us.
What more could you aks for?
I'm asking for Peace, Truth, Liberty...that kind of stuff.
So how did going after bombers turn into a multi-year war in a foreign nation to liberate them from thousands of years of their inadequite lifestyle/government...?
Oh, I mean, how did hunting down weapons of mass destruction turn into a multi-year war to bring democracy to a nation that hasn't goverened itself that way for thousands of years?
Not to quote Def Leppard, but it's time to "stop fighting for the god's of war, when we don't know what the hell we're fighting for..."
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness are the freedoms we are guaranteed.
Unfortunately, sometimes, peace has to be sacrificed to guarantee that to the vast majority of us. That same vast majority desires peace always.
To prevent 9/11 from happening again, what would you recommend the government do instead of what it is doing now?
Spying on Quakers and liberals will probably not prevent terrorist activities.
The FBI should have the authority to do whatever it takes to stop terrorist. So, should the NSA and CIA. However, they have to do it constitutionally. The 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) establshed a top secret, fast acting court to provide oversite for the NSA and CIA. If the Intellligence community wants to spy on Americans there has to be somebody protecting our constitutional rights. FISA mandate that this top secret court be the overseer.
Balance of power.
I'm all for stopping terrorism, but we must do it legally. We must do it in a way that protects the rights we are fighting for, instead of violating them.
You make good points here Watchman, but my question is this.
Does the FISA oversee the FBI or just the CIA and NSA?
Because that makes a difference. Is what the FBI is doing truly unconstitutional?
What if the FISA does something that is unconstitutional? Who watches them to make sure they do not violate anything?
Lastly, what does it all matter? If you read the Left Behind series, all this sets us up and makes it easier for Nicolae (the Antichrist) to spy on everyone in the name of terrorism. How could you be against bringing Biblical prophesy to reality ;)
right, so Nicolae can ride a pig through the Temple - didn't tha happen in one of those books?
The FISA Court is over seen in the same way that all federal courts are - by higher courts of appeal and the Supreme Court, as well.
FISA does not handle FBI since FBI goes throught the Justice Dept and regular Federal court system. If the FBI is operating with a warrant, and are acting in the interests of Justice, no problem. I wonder if they are being used for political means, howwever. If so, that is wrong. It wouldn't the first time.
